Shelf-Life: Freeze Dried Ground Beef will store for 10 to 15 years in a sealed #10 can (oxygen absorber included) under ideal storage conditions (cool, dry place). Once opened, freeze dried meat should be used within 1 month if refrigerated, 1 week if not.
Instructions: Add 1 cup of boiling water to ½ cup of Freeze Dried Ground Beef. Stir once, cover and let stand for 5 to 7 minutes. Drain off excess water and use the beef as you would use fresh ground beef.

Good for certain uses

The flavor of this is fine, and for that I'd give it 5 stars. However, the texture -- as with the Rancher's Cut Chicken -- tends to be crumbly, with a good deal of meat dust in the can. So on texture, I'd give it a three.
If you're making meatballs or meatloaf, the crumbliness isn't a bad thing; but if you're making something where you want to have the meat intact, this might be a problem.
So averaging between the two, I'll give it 4 stars, but if you're making meatballs, this is a 5-star product.

Fine texture of beef makes it great in tacos and sloppy joes, also put it in soup. I was tired of cooking up a whole pound of beef when i didnt need it and guess who is the only person in the house to eat leftovers.. ME. So now i just make what ever amount i want. So Easy to stock up on meat without buying a freezer etc...Freeze Dried is the best way!

If you use this product, and the taste and smell is to strong, your not using BOILING HOT water, Crazy Boiling Hot Water (is there such a thing :). Experimenting with the can I have, I found that if you boil a cup of water on a stove, in a deep pot, with the lid on, make sure it is a roiling boil. When the water is boiling pour 1/2 cup of meat into the pot and then take it off the stove. You need a deep enough pot so that when you pour the meat in, the foam will not go over the sides of the pot ( think of how a deep fryer acts ). I use a quart and a half pot for one 1/2 cup of meat and one cup of water, this seems to be a good combination. IF the meat does not foam some when you pour it in, the water was not hot enough. Let sit for about 6 minutes string only once after you pour the water in. Also, if you are outside you may need to put your pot in a pot cozy or towel to keep it from getting cool to quickly. If the pot cools off it will not re-hydrate the meat properly. Drain and use as any ground meat in soups, stews, or sauces. Now, my daughter says it tastes OK, since she is our resident food critic, I can now use it in my meal plans.
I tried pouring the water over the meat, but if you use the wrong pan, pot, bowl, combination, the product may not re-hydrate to your satisfaction. I did find that if you use one 4-cup and one 1-cup Pyrex measuring cups, pouring the water from the 1 cup into the 4 cup which has the meat in it, works good, if you "super heat" the water in the one cup measuring cup of water in a microwave oven. This can be dangerous if not done correctly and may explode burning the cook. I haven't got burned, but I don't recommend it. I like the stove method better.

I have a can that I am not sure I can use. I think the flavor and smell is quite strong and I can't seem to make the flavor calm down with repeated rinses. I gave some to others and they don't like the strong flavor either. I was hoping it would be an easy way to have it on hand for camping and hiking but I'm sorry to say it is not usable. My wife said that maybe we got a bad run, but the price is to high to justify trying another can.

So far, I've used this in spaghetti, sloppy joes, and tacos. I have absolutely no complaints. After rehydrating, rather than drain, I usually substitute the access water for the water called for in the various recipes.
The small pieces of beef break-up very easily, so I've found it works better to pour from the can rather than scoop. Also, much of the beef appears to be nothing but powder. The powder rehydrates into small beef and is completely usable.
