Fine oats, they are
John (Waterford) 11/30/2011 4:03 PM
Nutty, chewy and delicious. The longer you cook them, the softer and creamier they get. Cook them the night before and save them for a week in the fridge. Or just presoak them overnight and they cook in ten minutes.

I don't even like oatmeal...
Debbie (Salisbury, NC) 4/3/2010 3:08 AM
Honestly, I have never liked oatmeal - and I think it is because all my life all I ever had what was everyone calls "oatmeal". I could stomach the instant stuff - as long as it wasn't gooey, but if you read the label, once you get past all the sugar and extras added, you have very little true oatmeal. I tried Honeyville's steel cut oats because they looked interesting and I love everything else I've ever got from Honeyville. Steel cut oats are the BEST and so very simple to cook. All you have to do is add 1 cup of the oats to 5 cups of water and 1 teaspoon of salt (very important). Place all in your crockpot, give a good stir, and cook on high for approximately 2 hours (I use an older 4 quart crockpot for this). Check them once after about an hour and stir. After 2 hours you have the best oatmeal ever - and you don't need to add a thing to it - best of all - when you fix it this way, you have several mornings covered for breakfast - just reheat in micro-safe bowl for a minute and you're set. It couldn't get any easier or better. My son who requires Honeyville's freeze dried strawberries by the truckload even let me sprinkle a few of those on top with some of the dried blueberries too - now that is awesome! Thanks Honeyville for a superior product, low cost, and exceptional customer service.

Love them!
Angie (Michigan) 2/18/2010 5:59 PM
My whole family loves these. Nice and hardy, great with the freeze dried fruit added. We also cook them with 4-1 ratio and leave the lid off the pan, stirring occasionally (adding water if needed).

Cooking Steel Cut Oats
Sally Greer (United States, Az) 12/12/2009 1:20 PM
This is the greatest, make sure you use 4 cups of water or milk to one cup of oats, the new cans are now saying 6-1 and that wont work. I cook mine 45 min. or longer. Keep the pan covered and on low once it starts to boil. My daughter has a small crock pot and sets it at night and by morning she has her oatmeal all ready for the family. She says she doesnt have time in the morning to make it. Just a hint to busy Mothers or Fathers. We buy by the case even though there are only two of us because of the great deal, the cans keep for 10 yrs!!! Ours dont!!! Five days out of seven we have our steel cut hot oatmeal and love it, I say we are addicted!!
